Shape of the G Wagon
SWB is by far the best, mean on and off road - and very exclusive.
Strange cornering fast at that height.....quite an experience.....but then there are some nutters around......

Personallyi love the shape... so rugged yet civilized and kick @$$... as for my parents' view... they think it looks like one of those funeral cars that carry the body... umm..... what are they called...yea.. a herst(?).

The G is a classic
This is one vehicle that will always look tough. The list of tough looking 4X4s that look the business and can do the business is very short. Basically I envisage a black G-class and a black Hummer (H1 only, don't like the H2 much, too tonka toy lookalike).
The G-class looks tough thanks to its boxy shape, hey who ever argued with a wall? and that front looks at you like Mike Tyson and you just stepped on his shoes!
The difference is it says what it means and means what it says, e.g. it will go where other 4X4s would not Dare tread!

looks are very subjective.
If you want something that looks like a big brute then the G-class would have the X5 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. However if smooth styling is what you want of your SUV then the G is definately not for you!

Also BMW never claims this as a SUV.. but as a SAV.

Actually we (as a family) get together a WHOLE lot and someone already has a G500, two of them would look odd, no one else had a X5 so he got one.

I like the Volvo V70R and S60R - oh, and the AMG SL55 or SL65
I'm probably one of the biggest Mercedes fans out there, but I must say that I agree with those who state that the G class styling is desperately due for an update.
That being said, I would be more than happy owning / driving one.
BUT... if I were to invest in an SUV/SAV, there would be MANY other offerings that would attract me first;
BMW X5
Volvo XC90
Lexus RX330
MB ML500/55
amongst others.... (that list is not in order)
but the G class just seems to be on the boxy side to the extreme.... too boxy without a stylistic message.

I think the G series looks like a Jeep Cherokee, while the X5, perhaps the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Great off-road vehicles usually aren't the sexiest vehicles. Take the Land Rover Discovery for instance.
If you want sex appeal, grab one of the vertibles.
