550 vs 55

Just test drove both. I have to say that the performance between the two is diminishing. Used to be the 500 was pretty underpowered but the 550 engine leaves you wondering why AMG. Although handling seems to be much stiffer on AMG model it's hard to tell the performance difference.

Other than the AMG body kit, the alcantera headliner, and the kompressor are there any other differences I should know about?

Hard to believe you didn't feel any difference. The HP and torque of the 55 motor is more then substancial.

G550 = 382 HP @ 6,000 rpm, 391 ft-lb
G55 = 500 HP @ 6,100 rpm, 516 ft-lb

I know it.
I'm not saying there wasn't a difference. But the 550 owned up pretty well. I remember the 500 felt very underpowered. But somehow that new 550 motor really owns up.

I will say that the 55 is a lot louder and it feels as though it has a bank of power left no matter how fast you're going. The 550 however doesn't feel like it has endless power but is still very quick and fast.

I don't know the difference in suspension but the 55 definitely felt tighter. The sales guy at the dealer didn't know much about the car so I wasn't about to ask him.

having driven a friend's G500, I felt even that had stout performance so i hear what you're saying...g55k remains one of the roads great autos though

so trez, are you trading the CLS or the lease over? if so the G is a great decision and great deals to be had on the 09s- you can keep the miles low by driving your truck and have a real keeper on your hands

Oh , haha, I need to update my profile. I don't have the truck any more.
But yeah, lease is up in March of 2010. Ideally I would get into something new by Dec. If not then next March is fine. I still love the 63. It still puts a smile on my face every morning.
The G55 has been on my top 5 list for a long time. I love that car. But it's a bit too pricey and I really wouldn't mind downgrading.
When I got the CLS63 I always knew I would downgrade after. I dunno. I might look for a deal on a used G55.
