G55 officially launched in India for $242,000

I arrived in Mumbai early this morning and was surprised to see two brand new G55's at an octroi stop (tax) at 4AM near the Vashi Bridge...then I read this and it all made sense:

AMG G55 Stomps Onto Indian Territory

Following the announcement of the relaunch of the Maybach brand in India, Mercedes has announced the introduction of the Geländewagen, more widely known as the G-Class. The first G-Class model to be marketed in the sub-continent is no less than the G55 which has been massaged by AMG. The Geländewagen (cross-country vehicle) has the distinction of being the longest-serving model in the Mercedes passenger vehicle range. Even though its basic look and layout has not changed since its introduction, the handsome ruggedness of the G-Class continues to appeal to a generation of well-heeled younger buyers.

Powered by a 500 horsepower 5.5 liter V8, the G55 does the 0-60 sprint in 5.5 seconds. Not too shabby for a 2.5 ton all-wheel drive offroader. Apart from the standard features expected from Mercedes vehicles, the G-Class is a true off-road vehicle, unlike the BMW X5 or the Porsche Cayenne.

Proof of this are the 100% locking differentials, permanent drive to all four wheels and gear ratios that are designed for low-speed crawling and mountain driving, should the need arise. Electronic aids like ESP and 4ETS ensure modern-day driving refinement to the G-Class’s off road capabilities. Brought in as a completely built up unit, the G55 will cost 11 million Indian Rupees or 242,000 in U.S. currency.
