Which to buy? G550, X5, or RR Sport Supercharged?

Hello-
I am in the market for a 2010 or later new car, and I have been looking at the G550, the new BMW X5 xDrive35i, and the 2012 Range Rover Sport Supercharged. I am curious to hear from other owners your thoughts on the G-class and how the G55 differs from the G550... I am genuinely looking for some real guidance here. I drove the 2012 RR Sport Supercharged today and liked that too. I live in Park City, Utah and I need a good car for the mountains, great in the snow, but also a comfortable luxury vehicle. No dealers in my area seem to have a G550 to drive so I am a bit perplexed as to what I should do. A lot of the reviews say that spending the additional money on the AMG isn't really necessary... I am considering the G-Class AMG once they introduce the G63, but I need something in the interim. Is there any technology missing from the G? Do you like the stereo system? We keep a GL550 at another house and really like it... Please advise. Thanks so much.

Best,
Dave

Every person buys a car for their own reasons, its not possible for us to tell which one is better for you. The Range Rover is more comfortable, handles better, and has about the same power as a G55...and is cheaper. Having said that, I'd never get one over my G55...that's not something I can explain. In terms of practicality, the G-Class is more durable than thr Range Rover or GL, is rarer, and in certain off road situations performs better.

The G-Class doesn't have some of the tech in the newer Range Rover but you can figure out those deifferences from the brochure.

I think most G owners feel that there should not be a discussion between an RR, and X5, and a G. They are hardly comparable in the details. Yes, they all have four wheels and some other similarities- to a point. The distinguishing features of the G make it a completely different vehicle than the other two mentioned. It fits certain people, and doesn't fit others. No one can tell you.

Your best bet is to test drive each and every single one of them. Like Jimmy said: "Every person buys a car for their own reasons, its not possible for us to tell which one is better for you. "

That being said, the G-class is simply unique in an indescribable way.

I haven't exactly followed the evolution of the G wagon but I thought they were solid axle front and rear and originally built for the German military. Buffering their amazing off road capability with high tech grannies and suspensions, fancy interiors and electronics doesn't change the design purpose of this vehicle. I live in a Boston suburb and my neighbor has one and uses it as a soccer mom/dad vehicle. The vehicle has never been off road. I can't imagine what happens with a top heavy box when you swerve to avoid hitting a local Boston idiot that just cut you off without a signal at 70 mph. I had a 1st gen GL deisel and it was very capable in the snow, had a great ride and its sweet spot was highway cruising. Its off road capability was <0. If exclusivity and/or off-roading is the goal the AMG worked G is the answer. If fast and confidence inspiring as a daily driver, I'd pick an ML63 every day and buy a used Jeep to beat up off-road, although an SRT-8 w/470 hp.......so many choices, so little time.

Since its beginning, the G-class always had front/rear rigid axles. I, also, am not sure how it has evolved but after owning two (a 2009 G55 and now a 2010). I can say that the vehicle does not feel like it has rigid axles. I don't how Germans manage to do it but they do it well. I don't find the car harsh at all. My first car was a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 (10 years ago) and also had front/rear rigid axles. It felt as if you were in a small boat on high sea. It was rock solid but handled horribly. To contrast, I drove a F-250 recently, which has front/rear rigid axles and it also felt like it didn't have them. Newer cars with front/rear rigid axles must have evolved in some way. As far as the Jeep SRT8 is concerned, it is, by far, the worst and least comfortable car I have driven. Low profile tires with CLK63-Black Edition like suspension on an SUV make no sense.

You write a question and go ballistic when nobody answers within one hour. My suggestion is therapy.

How the Land Cruiser didn't make your shortlist is baffling.
