Guys,

My brother has a G55, and is concerned about the rough ride. A couple months ago, i read about a thread that says that by using a G500 suspension on a 55 to soften the ride.

Is that true?

Only the shock absorbers are different (if it's a 2004 or older G55) so a simple swap is possible. Another option (which I have not investigated) is to modify it to match the 2005 G55 since it has some changes to improve the ride while still reducing body roll. Not sure exactly what's been done.

I've only driven the G55k briefly so I can't make an informed recommendation. Your friend should go to their dealer and test drive the newer model and see if the changes are any good.

The G55k suspension is an improvement over the G55. Its not as soft as the G500, but its between the 2.

G55 suspension
I visited AMG in Affalterbach in early October and asked one of their techs to compare suspensions. He held out his left hand and said this is a G500; then his right hand about a foot higher and said this is a pre Kompressor G55. Lastly he moved his right hand down to about 4 inches above his left and said this is where the new G55 is. I had an '03 G55 for two weeks, hated it and returned it! I was relieved to get my traded G500 back.

My '05 G55 is being built this week and should arrive at my Phila area dealer by the end of the year. Anyone interested in a perfect '02 G500 with only 7,300 miles on it, let me know. I have the optional AMG wheels that look much better than the standard G500 wheels and are "hands down" much easier to clean. Email dharrar@larmon.com.
