2011 G55 AMG (124,000 miles)
2011 G55 AMG...wont start (125k miles)

Hey everyone, I'm hoping you can help me with a problem I had with my G.

Recently, we had some really heavy rain here in Virginia Beach, and while my car usually handles bad weather just fine, this time was different. I drove home during the downpour and went through a section of deep water—probably about 8-12 inches—and some water splashed up pretty high.

When I got home, everything seemed normal. But about four hours later, I went out to my car and it wouldn't start. The lights, vents, and locks all worked, but the engine wouldn't even try to crank. I tried jiggling the transmission lever and starting it again, but nothing.

The next morning, I tried again. The car started and ran for about a minute before it turned off. On my second attempt, it ran for a minute and a half, the engine revved up to 2,000 RPM, and then it turned off again. I used my OBD reader and got some codes, and a few dashboard lights came on.

When I opened the hood the next day, the hood liner was completely soaked and hanging down, and the car had a damp smell. I also felt behind the rugs under the dashboard, and they were damp too.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Any ideas what might be going on?

Yes, definitely disconnect the power and don’t try to start it up while it’s wet. Electronics can get wet and survive no problem as long as power is not sent through them. Hard to say where your water got in, but if you have damp carpet, it might have come in from a clogged windshield drain, or if any plugs are missing from the floor. You could also have water coming from the sunroof drains overflowing that would usually go down the a pillar, but I wouldn’t expect a wet sound dampening pad in the engine if that was the case.

You can throw a dehhumidifier in there for a couple days before trying to remove the carpets, otherwise peel back the carpets and see if there’s any water in the channels of the floor for the best result.

If you get to the point of removing any modules or electronics that you see in there, get yourself some electronics cleaner or a bunch of 91% alcohol or vinegar to clean the boards very well. Some people might not think this is necessary because it wasn’t salt water but all water and dirt can carry electricity (ec through the metal ions/elements) unless it is distilled water..

If you need to deal with the smell, once it is completely dry shock it with ozone. that will kill fungus and bacteria, but it must be dry or you can have negative chemical byproducts produced.

Water got into the electronics. Common issue after deep water. Likely soaked a fuse box or control module. Needs a professional to dry and inspect it ASAP before it causes more damage.

I recommend not taking to Charles Barker(dealership). As the member said..Shop vac, and remove carpet to dry. Seems like the G is in limp mode..once dry get sone foam carpet fresh from $ tree (few cans) help reduce smells. GL
