Mitsubishi increases Canadian recall on i-MiEV into the States
Looking in the States
Mitsubishi claims that only 261 units in the U.S. will be affected by the recall. The issue will cause the Safety Restraint System warning light to come on during a diagnostic check. The issue is with compatibility between the airbag sensors and self-diagnostic software in the SRS.
The side impact airbags will not inflate if the automobile is in motion and the light is on. The other problem is that the front airbag may delay before inflating. The chance of injury or death increases when safety attributes are not working.
However, the car maker points out that it know of no accidents, injuries or fatalities caused by the problem as of this time.
The vehicles were built between Nov 4, 2011 and Dec. 22, 2011 if they were affected.
Most recalled
The size of the recall may seem small to some. Nevertheless, it represents over half of the 350 i-MiEVs sold in the States.
The MiEV does not have a ton of U.S. supporters. It was said to trigger range anxiety by Consumer reports because the range miles per battery charge were inconsistent. It was also called uncomfortable in the review.
However, potential buyers may find it easier to get a car loan for the MiEV than for other so-called "green" models. At $29125, it has the lowest price tag of any EV presently accessible in the United States, besides used car sales.
Contact from Mitsubishi
At this point, no date has been announced for the recall campaign to start. However, affected owners will be notified to take a MiEV to a certified dealer to have the incompatible airbag sensors replaced at no cost.

Beginning of this recall
Almost 50 i-MiEVs were recalled earlier in Canada for the same issue, which is why most people expected the recall would come to the U.S. fairly soon.
The Intelligent Forfour was the original name of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. It did not appear in the United States under the new name until the 2010 LA Auto Show. The Forfour was produced in a collaborative effort between DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi between 2004 and 2006, and it was bought in Europe. The businesses split ways leaving Mitsubishi with the Forfour and DaimlerChrysler with the original Wise Car.
