Can someone tell me if there is a way to tell if the timing chain on a 1981 380 SL has been updated without disassembling the front of the engine? The car is in overall good to very good condition but there are no records of the work that has been done on the car.

I'm not 100% but imo without looking at it NO.
You will know if its bad though before you would know if its been replaced.
