what is this wire? (AC temp sensor?)

Hi folks,

I have an 1983 300D w123 with 163K on a frozen odometer so probably closer to 200K (actually I have two 83 300d's). The original climate control unit seemed to work electronic's wise but none of the buttons would stay pressed.

I pulled the unit to replace it with another. When I did so, a black wire with a skinny bronze connector having a hexagonal end popped out from somewhere as well. See the attached pics.

What is this wire? The temp sensor for the climate control? If so, shouldn't that be routed up to the top of the dash? The new unit doesn't seem to work so I'm wondering if the temp sensor is the cause.

thanks!

Andrew
