1965 220se and a 283 Chev V8.

Hello to all the classic Mercedes Benz fans out there. I'm new to this forum and this is the first time I have ever actually used a forum. I've been an absolute lover of vintage Mercedes Benz cars, but none more than the Heckflosse. Also am a huge fan of the V8 engine. So I'm just wondering, I have a 283 small block Chev, does anyone know if it would fit in a 220se? And if it does, what manual transmission would be the best to fit and put behind it? If anyone would be able to anwser this for me I greatly appreciate your help! Thank you all!

Curious to see if some have adapted this also.
Thinking why couldnt one use a chebby 4-5 spd, plenty of options on hyd clutch setups, do your crossmember and have a driveshaft made. A T5 is cheap along with a slave out of an 80s one ton shouldnt be too hard to put together

Grew up on the SBC cant beat em on simplicity parts cost etc.
Purists wont like it oh well!

If a Mercedes V8 can fit in the hole, a Chevy V8 will have plenty of room. As for a trans, get whatever you can stick on the V8 you are putting in. For shifter location, I found most American transmissions from the 60s and 70s are pretty short.

I am swapping a M119 into a W108 (similar platform) and found that the Ford toploader trans is barely long enough, and it is one of the longer transmissions of the era. Of course, you can always make the shifter long and bend it to be in the right spot.
