Euro 1983 280SL MB VIN# WDB10704212017434 (Not Listed ???) Automatic
Timing Chain Tightner

I'M NOT HAVING MUCH SUCCESS MATCHING THE CHAIN TIGHTENER TO THE SLIDING RAIL. (PROTRUDING POINT.) THE CHAIN TIGHTENER AND SLIDING RAIL BOTH ARE MEDAL TO MEDAL. BOTH ENDS ARE ABOUT AS CIRCULAR AS THE SIZE OF A PENCIL ERASER HEAD. WHEN I TRY TO ASSEMBLE THE RIGHT SIDE CAMSHAFT GEAR, AT THE POINT OF CONTACT ...THE SLIDING RAIL SLIPS PAST THE TIGHTNER..

Timing Chain Assembly

I'm trying to put assemble the camshaft and sprockets. Also, aline the sliding rail has a pin which extends off the lower end that matches up with the protruding end of the chain tightner.

My VIN NO. DOESN'T EXIST IN THE VIN# SYSTEM. ALL THREE OWNERS HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH REGISTERING THIS CAR.

VIN. # WDB10704212017434

Your VIN number is 10704212017434. An inexperienced person read WDB in the box before the VIN in EPC and set the wrong VIN in your documents. Your VIN number was made before MB joined the VIN standard where W is Europe, D is Germany (or West Germany in 1982), B is Mercedes made in Sindelfingen (if I'm not mistaken).
Attached is the picture of the timing components I got with your VIN. If you tell me which parts you need I cen get you the P#'s. For some reason I cannot print the parts list.

Thanks

Wow! Your research is interesting! I appreciate your efforts. I would like that parts list. Every resource is optimal for this commodity jewel. The diagram doesn't show the piece at the bottom end of the sliding rail (191) that leads to the chain tightener (203). The two pieces come together when delicately maneuvered into position for assembly. (extreme patience.) Thanks for the fellowship!
