Transmission shifter noise

Afternoon. My '85 300D started this noice seemingly at the base of the transmission shifter (auto).

The noise sounds like a grinding noise. If I move the shifter to the right, it goes away and then can come back. If the car is in "S", there is no sound.

I thought there might have been a coin or something like that in the slot where the shifter is, but nothing that I could see.

The grinding noise is not constant. There are times when it disappears, but when it is present, the only way to make it go away is to slightly move the shifter to the right, and sometimes hold it there.

Hopefully some one can diagnose this issue and thank you.
