Need help with prospecting Mercedes 250sl

Hello there! I'm hoping to gain some insight on the proper way to research and inspect a W113 250sl Pagoda. I'm helping a friend in his search, and I want to know anything I should look out for and be sure to check. Obviously, we will be paying for a thorough inspection (does anyone have a recommendation for a vintage Mercedes specialist in the SoCal area?), but I'd love to hear any tips or considerations we should know when looking at these cars. What are the more valuable styles and engine types? Any years I should avoid?

Also, I'm embarrassed to ask this, but how do I search the car history using the "VIN" from these cars? I have only seen 14 digit serial numbers that the online VIN decoders won't accept. Is there an alternate method to look up the car's history?
