Model Designation

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you more knowledgeable MB guys out there could explain something to me. I have noticed that some model designations are very close together. For instance, the W201 190E was replaced by the W202, and then the W203 and now the W204. Then you have the W123, W124 and then the designation jumped to model W210. My question is, does this imply something about the bottom lines of the cars platform? Is a completely different designation a signal that the platform is totally new, and not updated or revised? Am I looking way too far into this??

yeah, I think you are just looking too far into this. I have thought about it before but I believe they are just progressing numerically up with each new model and trying to keep them all somewhat around each other.

I asked a similar question about what the S, E, C, L, K, R, G (ad nauseum) means. Most, if not all, of these stand for German words by the way.

The S series is also inconsistant, going from 126 to 140, then jumping to 220 and 221.

I am curious by nature, and I would like to see some rational explanation for these apparent inconsistancies as well. Normally, the Germans are a very orderly and disciplined people, so I'm betting that there IS some rhyme or reason for the various numbering systems.
