Murat Gunak has left his job as Mercedes-Benz's deputy design chief to become design director of the Volkswagen group brands.
Gunak, 45, succeeds Hartmut Warkuss, 62. Gunak left Mercedes December 11 and will start his new job on April 1, 2003. At VW group, Gunak will oversee design activities at the VW, Skoda and Bentley brands. Walter de' Silva retains his position as head of design at VW's Audi brand group, which includes Audi, Seat and Lamborghini.
Gunak began his career at Mercedes-Benz in the late 1970s. He left in 1983 to take a position at the Ford Design Center in Cologne. He returned to Mercedes-Benz in 1986, where he was a key contributor ro the styling of the A class and SLK roadster, but again left to take the chief designer position at Peugeot in 1994. While at the French automaker, he helped create a more aggressive design for projects such as the 206 supermini.
Gunak returned to Mercedes-Benz in 1998 to become No. 2 to Peter Pfeiffer, who had just replaced Bruno Sacco as head of the Mercedes-Benz design center in Stuttgart. At Daimler, Gunak took Pfeiffer's former job as design chief for Mercedes passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

It would be a pity if whoever designed the CL/SL/S/E moved elsewhere. That would be a real tragedy.

The W209 is a disaster for the CLK class because it kept nothing from the original CLK and it does not even remotely resemble the W208, it's a great car don't get me wrong, but it should not be a CLK.

The 208 Clk lost its individuality, its aggressive character, --- the 209 has become part of the MB blend, as evidenced in this current R&T review:
"The true test
of automotive Darwinism will occur in a year or so when a new
crop of coupe contenders — most notably the BMW 6 Series and
Audi A4 Coupe — will vie for market-place supremacy." unquote

...what a pity, -- what a mishmash, blend, smorgasboard, hodgepodge - the new 209 CLK!
