Question Designation of Model Numbers

Why does Mercedes-Benz designate the M-Class with the new 3.7 liter V6 motor the ML350 instead of the ML370?

For the same reason the Coupe is still the C230 not the C180. There are a few cars over the years that the model # did not reflect the Engine.

I can understand the designation of a model to make it appear to have a larger displacement motor than it has, but what would lead to the designation of a model that makes it appear to have a smaller displacement motor that it has?
