Not really related , but I went 153 in a '94 toyota supra twin turbo, and it was scary fast. what a rush , but stupid in hindsight. I was 17. Then again, i didn't learn much since I went 145 on my zx-7r motorcyle last year. Talk about a rush. And it gets there fast. I guess i finally did learn tho, sold that thing! too hard to control myself on it. I've only had my e300 up to 120, it felt a little floaty without even having the sport suspension. Did feel smooth and solid tho.

2002 E55
159 mph. On several occasions, I've run into the speed limiter in my stock '02 E55. Feels pretty stable. Most recently, I topped out for about 5 minutes. When I slowed down and the state trooper caught up to me, he thought I'd been going 160. Of course he couldn't prove it, though. I thought about saying, "no, officer, I couldn't have been going faster than 159."

2002 E55
He ticketed me for 101 in a 70 . . . which is what he got when he hit me with instant-on radar. It'll cost me about $400 to keep the ticket off my record -- $250 in court costs and $150 for a mouthpiece who knows the podunk JP. We don't have "points" in Texas, but I'd rather keep my pristine driving record.

Driving 159 mph on a public highway is a dumb idea, even in a supercar like the E55. Have a blowout at that speed, and you're likely to end up in a wad of steel and blood somewhere in the next county. Hit a rock or a piece of 18-wheeler tread, and you might total your lovely car. If the cop thinks you were running from him, he arrests you for evading arrest (a felony in Texas). If he doesn't, he can still arrest you for reckless driving (a misdemeanor). Have an accident that kills someone, and they'll try their best to put you in prison for manslaughter. They may succeed.

I've had dozens and dozens of cars over 100 mph, including a '93 Cadillac Fleetwood limousine at 102 mph. These are my highest ones though:

-140 mph in a '91 Dodge Stealth R/T Twin Turbo
-130 mph in a '94 Ford Mustang GT
-125 mph in a '92 Audi 100S
-123 mph in my very own daily driver Accord with 350K miles (downhill, of course)
-110 mph in a '97 Dodge Ram 2500 V-10

I topped out a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair Monza at a whopping 81 mph.
The fastest I've ever driven a Mercedes is 120 mph, in a 2000 CL500 and a 2002 SLK32 AMG.

MBMB, it seems like you got off relatively lucky! I thought that you were generally locked up if caught for anything much over 100.

I've gotten two tickets in the past five months--both late at night on the same wide four-lane divided highway. First one was in November--73/55, 2pts. I believe I was accurately clocked. Went to court, pleaded guilty w/explanation, got probation, $100 fine. Second time was the end of March. I was going 60 in a 45. When pulled over, the officer told me she clocked me at 70 (no way, but I didn't argue). She said she'd be 'nice' and write me up for 65/45. That's one point (??). I have not yet settled this ticket. If you have any ideas on how to preserve my driving record since I'm on probation already, let me know. I've almost completely quit speeding at night, not quite during the day. I was extremely polite to both officers, but neither of them let me off easily the way police have let many of my friends off.

Also, how many of you have radar detectors? I'm thinking about getting one (V1 only). It's expensive for me, so I'd like to know if radar detectors are really effective, if one maintains good common sense and vigilance as well.

I've had my '86 BMW 528e (w/225/50VR16 tires) over 100 eleven times in the past year. However, I've only exceeded 100 once since my first ticket (108/65).

Good luck to you all and speed safely!!

Hey Craig

Isn't that illegal to be driving when you have 3pts on your record? I thought when you get 3pts your license is revoked and you can't drive for xx amount of months/yrs??

No, I don't think it's illegal. I believe there are twelve points on your license (I live in Maryland). Accumulate all those, and your license is revoked. I think a reckless driving charge will add (or take away, however you look at it) half the points--6. There are license suspensions in between, I think, but definitely not before 6. I have one friend who got three tickets within a summer. I think if your license was revoked after two tickets, there would be a lot of people not driving!

Still, I ought to call the Motor Vehicle Administration to confirm this. I've found a lot of info on the internet referring to the 12-point system. How is it in CA?

If anyone has more definitive information, I'd be happy to hear!

I maybe wrong but i think here in CA it's 3 pts(can someone verify this) and your license is revoked. I guess different state diefferent laws. But that's interesting to know.

I got two tickets within an hour one day. I got them in San Francisco near State University. The first one was a stop sign ticket, I ran it desperately trying to find parking. After that I was gonig 70 down Sunset Boulevard, which is a 35 mph zone. The cop wrote me up for 65. I set my court date on Christmas Eve and wuddaya know, I got them both dismissed. -=o)

....70 on Sunset is excusable but running a stop sign is plain stupid.....For ANY reason. I got hit a few years back by a SS runner and was injured. With lots of friends and family in the SFPD, I made sure one of 'em showed up to do the accident report. I guarantee he didn't get ANYTHING dismissed. Run into me and I'll make your life miserable. I promise.

Yeah JamE55, I believe you about the CA points system, but that's really strict! I was browsing the internet last night and found that it's similar in North Carolina. I was also able to double-check Maryland--they do have a 12-point system here, and you don't get your license suspended until you reach twelve, and you have to get all twelve within a year. You get one point automatically erased from your record each year, so it would take me 3 years to get rid of three points.

As I mentioned, my most recent ticket hasn't even been entered into the court records yet (after three weeks?!), so I haven't settled it. Technically, I'm still on probation with a clean record.

I'd be grateful to hear from any of you regarding two issues:

Do any of you have ideas about what I should do about my most recent ticket (i.e. fight it, plead guilty and try to get the point taken away, or just pay it and get the point, plus the previous two).

Are radar detectors actually helpul and worth it in preventing future tickets? As I said, I hardly speed at night anymore, and if I do it's not by more than 5-10 mph, even in insanely limited zones. How do you all avoid tickets (or do you really actually obey the speed limits?).

I look forward to hearing anything anyone has to say!

P.S. For the record, speed limits are the only traffic laws I break. Two years after receiving my license, I continue to do the two-stop thing at stop signs (come to compete stop at sign or line, then pull forward to where I can see, stop, and check for traffic. Everyone else I know rolls through. In residential areas (25 mph zone or along parked cars), I never exceed 30. I signal religiously, and always wear a seat belt as well as my required corrective lenses. However, I generally tend to be 10-20 mph over the speed limit. I'm not bragging; I just hope everyone sees my driving style in perspective.

the fastest i had driven in my last 2000 328CI was 115 mph...did't go any faster because i just can stand the bumpy ride. it was shaking me to death...

now aday i usually drive around 85-90 on the freeway in my C32. just a couple days ago i hit 142 mph on a straight with no cars drove for about a min and some idiot merge on to the freeway and cut in front of me. i had to slamed on the brake pretty hard to avoid hitting him. GOOD BRAKES

i'm gonna try to take it up to 155 if i have a chance, but till then...safe driving for me

He's the idiot for trying to merge onto the freeway? Who was the one going 142 mph?

It's always important to blame the other guy

When a friend of mine rides with me, he always chides me for not being 'aggressive' enough--for example when making a left turn onto a busy road, he wants me to ease out and block the street with my car to force some of the traffic to stop. Yet when we come upon another driver in the middle of the road, he gets mad and comments, "Look at this idiot!". Apparently, what's OK for me to do is not OK for someone else.

Tailgating is another example--when someone does it to you, they're a terrible driver, but when you're following someone else too closely, it's justified because they're driving way too slow, etc.

When you're going 142 mph, everyone else is a slow driver

FYI the guy was going about 60 mph...and he was already ON the freeway for about 1/4 mile and cut in front of me when i got close to him...i guess i should have stated that in the first place...hope that clears that up.

Yeah, it does. 60 in a 145 mph-zone is definitely way too slow.

I do understand, though--people do some retarded things. Glad you didn't hit him (he should be as well).
