Where to get service done?

Greetings,

New to the forum, and soon to be Benz owner. (In the market for an 07 CLK550 or E550)

Having come from a Lexus, the low-maintenance king in my book, I get my work done at Toyota dealers and usually bring my own parts. Case in point - last oil change cost me $15 plus my own synthetic oil.

I know a Mercedes is going to cost more to maintain; that's ok. At the same time, I refuse to pay $500 for some routine maintenance on a practically new car. Is it the case that you can follow just what's in the owner's manual and escape for just an oil change and tire rotation for the first 30k miles?

Aside from dealers (or maybe there are some good dealers for service), where does everyone get their work done on a new-ish Mercedes? I can't imagine a tiny independent shop would do sufficient work, but who knows...

Thanks!

SO You do NOT want to pay the dealer rates and THINK that Independents will NOT do sufficient work...

Do You know how most Independents are started? from DEALER techs

Then the only way to avoid that would be to do it yourself

Not sure about a CLK or E class but there are some non-obvious things with servicing an SL55, e.g. the oil pan is divided and has two drain plugs.

For less than $100 you can purchase an official Mercedes service DVD that will tell you all the non-obvious things if you service the vehicle yourself. See here for more info: http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/o...stedDocId=9124

Thanks for the posts, but I wasn't trying to offend anyone. I really am ignorant of Mercedes service- I know there's a wide range of options besides just the dealer.

My other question was whether you have to stick to the dealer's service or just the maintenance manual. For example, on my Lexus, the dealer wants to do a "60,000 mile service" for $1000, but when I look at the owner's manual, I only need a couple of fluid changes - no other parts or belts, which would end up costing more like $250. Do Benz dealers do the same thing?
