missing car

My friend placed a deposit on a 2003 CLK 320 on 10/25/02 at Silver Star Mercedes Benz with salesman, Owen Taback, Long Island City, NY.
He called the dealership on or about Jan 15th ,2003, to find out the status of car.
He was told by Owen "it vanished from the radar"
The sales manager reiterated this claim.
The salesman then offered to sell my friend a used SL500 for $61.900
He declined the offer.

Can someone give me an explanation for the vanished vehicle?

Call MBUSA...

1 800 FOR MERC and complain.

The dealer is supposed to tag the car from their allotment to the customer. They can't just "vanish." Sounds like the dealer was playing games with a car they didn't have to begin with...

They are obliged to find him a CLK as long as they have his $1000. I don't see an excuse really. Was he ever give a build date? Updates of these sorts should have reached him in the time period of his waiting.

Please tell us more about the situation.

The dealer provided no additional explnation to the situation. They offered to reorder the vehicle for him and have him wait another 3 months. The manager finally called my friend back after a phone call from my friend's lawyer. He offered to locate any car with similar specs. As of today, no phone call of the process was ever heard .The deposit was refunded as expected.

This buying experience is very bad for MB.

He should still call MB corporate and let them know. MB scores the dealers on this stuff and it affects their future allocations. They'll also be able to tell if his name was ever put into the system to begin with.

I hold this aganist SilverStar dealership more than anyone else. MBUSA can not do much about it.What can they say?" Sorry, you got screwed by your dealer!!"
The dealers are individually owned and operated.
BBB will hear this for sure.

the dealer probably sold it to somebody that offered him/her more money. That happened to a friend of mine at Van Nuys lexus dealership. We got an RX300 for a really good deal but the car was still at port. We waited for a few days and after a week and a half passed, I called back and they gave me some bs excuse that they could not sell us the car because it had some damage and needed to be fixed. I asked for their body shop to see the car and all I got was one excuse after another. I called the corporate office and they were of no help either. I would not blame the entire mercedes chain. I just would not go back to that one dealer. Good luck in finding another one.
