Just think of all the brainpower resources and technical resources (and experience using them) and owner goodwill that Daimler possesses as opposed to GM or Chrysler. It's not even close.

Daimler invented the car and have weathered 2 WW, many recessions. The only thing they have to do is right size.
Fortunately their cars and trucks are widely sought after. German industry is know for agility and right sizing so the sob story is mainly geared towards unions and political sympathy to smooth their path.
