Extended Warranty - yea or nay?

New member looking at a 2005 CLK55, ~60k kms, won't be a daily driver so minimal usage. The extended warranty offered by the MB dealer is ~CAD$4k, would I be crazy to get this or crazy not to?

I never opt for these kinds of things, and at this price I'm really leaning against buying it. Opinions appreciated.

I never bother with ext. warranties on TV's and toasters but on a car I might consider one. First, MB's are expensive to fix on big stuff like electronics, engine and transmission. Second, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a CLK55 a bit of a performance car? If so, it's probably been driven harder that say a E-Class station wagon. So maybe there's a little more chance that something might fail.

If you do get a warranty be sure to go over it with a fine tooth comb as they say. There have been a couple of posts recently by owners who had a problem and found out that the ext. warranty didn't cover it.

Ultimately, it comes down to what you are comfortable with. It's a gamble so do you feel lucky? You could put $4K in a CD instead and have a cushion if anything goes wrong and a nest egg if everything goes right.

I'm got the same questions, I just bought an 05 E55 with 38k miles and debating whether to get get an extended warranty, I've reading a lot on this forum and almost everyone says an extended warranty is a must. I'm still looking around for the right one though, good luck!

We just bought an extended warranty that covers the big stuff. Engine, transmission and drive. Quite reasonable considering we get four years/60k for a 2001 E320 with close to 90k on the clock.

I am in a great position that I could cover a serious breakdown, but I put it down to risk. How much risk am I willing to take on. Then look at the price.

For instance, say a engine replacement cost $3500, and the warranty costs $2000 a year. That would be $8000 over four years versus a one time charge of $3500. I would cover this myself.

You have to do the math yourself and figure it out. The consideration also for me, is that the warranty gives my wife a lot of peace of mind. That gives me a lot more peace of ear.....

the N/A motors are pretty much bulletproof, and very few aftermarket warranties cover anything other than the motor and tranny. (oiled parts)

I bought the car and passed on the warranty offered by the dealer. The in-service date was Sep 2004, so I suppose the 2yr MB extended warranty would only have covered me for a few more months. Thanks again for the comments.
