1967 250sl
New Engine for 67 250sl
Can anyone tell me what is the most powerful engine that I can put into a 1967 250sl? I am looking to upgrade the engine...something like an almost new sl engine...nothing wrong with the engine in there right now...just want to customize it...right now the transmission is a 4 speed manual. I would prefer to stay with manual transmission. I know that the transmission, drive shaft, and rear will have to be changed as well. Would appreciate some input...thank you.

I worked for a guy in the 70's that had a european 1971 Mercedes SL280 4.5
Yes a 4.5 V8 in a 1971. This wasn't offered in US until the next generation of SL as the 450SL. My understanding was that it was the same 4.5 V-8 as in the 1971 S class. It had great acceleration but real nasty understeer. It reminded me of a Sunbeam Tiger....
