Daimler apparently doesn't care much for people creating copies of their cars, especially their classics. Them crushing this (fake) 300 SL is essentially a message to all other fabricators out there: "Don't do it or we're coming for you with the crusher."

Guess our friends in Stuttgart ought to check and learn just how much publicity and "collectabilty" the replica Shelby Cobras have provided for the REAL Shelbt Cobras! I owned and drove a '55 W198 Gullwing way back in 1959-60 .. While a really neat, unique, and sweet classic body .. other than the direct fuel injection ..the rest of the car was slightly above most - but certainly not all.... (Check the competition records of Aston,Ferrari, Lancia, and Maserati throughout the 50s!) BTW..The ole 300 sedans' rear suspension was a REAL hairy and tricky handling nightmare on a wet brick street ..and the servo drums were unpredictable too..

IMHO This item is i.e. As ole WS said... "MUCH TO DO ABOUT NOTHING".... Guess the "Hallowed Gullwing Group" is really behind this ..even though a geniune GW is still an ORIGINAL ..vs a REPRODUCTION !!!! ..Not a big thing..

I think this is the only way to stop the copycat. Many of the original car manufacturer copies their upcoming model from past's very successful model especially which are famously known for his look. Then what about them?
