1986 190 E roof-lining removal

Has anyone ever removed the rear lining to get to sunroof tracks in the rear? I think something is stuck in the rails and need to get in there. i read in a forum that the rear windshield has to removed. so
question 1 is; can I just get a peek at the rails by partly removing the lining? or does the entire lining have to be removed thru removing of windshield?
2- How do I separate the lining from the roof? it almost looks like glued together. But I must be missing something, the lining must be removable without tearing the whole thing...there must be a thin layer of board or something between the lining/cloth and the metal roof. Thanks for help. (note: electrical/switch/motor/cable solution is not a possibility)
