Mechanical key

Why is it that the "slide out" mechanical key works sometimes and not other times.

2008 R320
Hey my first post here ever!

Anyways, I recently purchased a 2008 R320 and it came with both key fobs and their mechanical keys. The weird thing is that both of the mechanical keys lock/unlock the glove box and turn inside the drivers handle slot, but they do not unlock the door!!! Ever!
I would think if it turns then it should unlock, right?! I'm gonna have to search and maybe take the door apart and get at the lock itself and try to diagnose it, because to me it seems it would be a mechanical problem. My reasoning is it shouldn't be an electrical problem because if the car battery were dead, the mechanical key should unlock the door regardless, but in my case it wouldn't. I'm gonna create a thread on this as well and see what kind of info I get. Best of luck to ya!

A great idea! I've owned a number of Mercedes fro W208 to W220 chassis. In all instances the key, sometimes or every time, refused to work in the trunk or the door unlocking application. Since batteries are inevitably positioned in the trunk this phenomena becomes frustrating at one time or another in an owner's life. At least with the W208 chassis there was a hot post under the hood where you could add an auxiliary battery to power up the car and release the trunk to service the original battery. If there is a similar post in the W220 chassis I don't know about it.

Maybe the key is intended only for the glove box?

Let's hear what others have to say.
