Most likely speaking in Miles per hour as opposed to kilometer per hour.

yes it can, depends which one you're talking about. all benzes have backup speed limiters set at 187mph which would be 300km/h. i believe in one of the recent car mag tests of the CL55, the magazine got MB to remove the 155 limiter. the result was the car pulled without difficulty to 187mph and felt like it could go further. when told to the MB people they said they knew, and it didnt go faster because of the second limiter. read here

edit: and the slr has a supposed top speed of 223mph, which is 357km/h.

interesting i have never really looked at the non amg cars that way. I just assumed that they could go close to the same speed as the AMG just take a little while longer to get there.

160 is fast, but i know the s55 could go faster revs were in mid 4's so there is at least another 2.5k to go. 300 is possible but tires?

180 km/h = approx 111.8 mph. I do not think US non-AMG cars are limited to this speed. That would be completely arbitrary. I do believe I have exceeded that speed once in my non-AMG car.

When did "290Km/h" come into the picture?

I have a stock CLK 320 and like I said I hit 217km/h.

It depends on year and model - our 1998 C280 Sport is limited to 130 MPH due only to the Continental tires (now long gone)

My E-Class has a speed limiter that won't 'et you go faster than 135mph. Many new cars sold in the US have a max limit set far below the car's true potential. They do this for several reasons. It's too expensive to put z rated tires on the cars and insurance rates are lowered along with the top speed.

On my E-Class there is no chip I can put in to change it. The only way to get rid of the limiter is to have a tuner reprogram the CPU to the tune of $1000.

There is no 180 kn/h limit made by Mercedes. the Only one is the 155 mph but it's strange that the US have it to because it came from the fact that german highways are speed limit free.

The C Coupes are limited at 135 mph/217 kph, although you can coast past that. And yes, there's lots of engine left when you get there.
