Imagine Benz was equally reliable like a Honda is today, and still had the cutting edge technology with it's legendary design and name brand. This would propel MB and make them "untouchable"....However, with the recent poor quality, I believe it has had a major impact on sales negoitiation...I got my car for under invoice, and heard many others getting E-classes and such for invoice as well...do you believe having this sub-par reliablity is a major factor on this phenomenan?

hi pete,

no i don't think that to be the case.
i feel it is just market conditions that
are reflecting the general economy.

It does have something to do with it. I have never in my life heard of getting a Mercedes Under invoice which is happening with the C and E class models lately.

hey guys,

lets make sure we are on the same page.
pete...when you say "under invoice" do you mean
under the dealers invoice(the dealers actual cost) for the vehicle or under the msrp(the window sticker)?

Yes dealers invoice, or just slightly above it...Although this is mostly true for the C and E classes...not sure about the rest of the models

You mean *BELOW* Average:

http://www.jdpa.com/studies_jdpower/...ID=692&CatID=1

http://www.jdpa.com/studies/pressrel...ID=749&CatID=1

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...iablechart.htm

I agree with your premise. Poor reliability/quality *eventually* catches up to a brand through lower demand/sales/margins on new cars and poor resale values on preowned cars.

hey guys,

i'm not very familiar with the C class but from what i've read on these boards and encountered at my local dealer E's are not selling at dealer invoice. and gekko....since you seem to feel that jdpowers is the final word on cars....guess which full size suv they pick as most dependable????.......the GMC Denali. and just think.....lowly GMC beat toyota. so ....are you on your way out the door to by a new Denali?
in case you don't understand the point i am trying to make....jdpowers and similiar surveys have only so much value to an educated automobile enthusiasts. like i said in another post....where would Lexus be without jdpowers......would anynone actually pay hard earned money for such drab styling and a numb driving experience. ......consumer reports anyone??

Relaibility may be a factor, in part. The main reason is a more basic business one. As MB now competes in all segments of the market; the Board, stockholders, etc... now expect greater profit margins in order to expand, compete, and, of course - reward themselves. They now are in a cycle where volume has become an important factor in their survival. To add further incentive, there is a lot more choice out there than there was just 20 years ago.

I would like to know about the difference in reliability/quality from MB cars during Daimler-Benz compared to Daimler-Chrysler.

Here is something else to consider, Sales #'s taken from MB webpage. What does the sales volume increase do to reliability/quality?

Sales
2001 - 206,638 1996 - 90,844
2000 - 205,614 1995 - 76,752
1999 - 189,437 1994 - 73,002
1998 - 170,245 1993 - 61,899
1997 - 122,265 1992 - 63,312

Interested in what others think.
