Air Filters with finer batting any good?

2006 Mercedes C230 Sport Coupe V6
Air Filters with finer batting any good?
Just bought two Premium Guard Air Filters for my 2006 C230 V6.wWhen I inspected them saw that in addition to the paper folds they also have a layer of white fiber batting. Wonder why they would add this extra layer of protection which could possibly restrict some air flow. Has anyone used this type of filter?
