Current environmental laws are making it harder and harder for manufacturers to bring out sports cars with naturally aspirated engines. Chief among the companies affected is Mercedes and its AMG lineup.

"“Every car line has to reduce fuel consumption, even AMG. No one part of our business can be carried on the back of another. It’s a huge task to reduce AMG fuel consumption but we’ve realized that it’s also a huge opportunity,” Weber stated. He went on to say that the reason we currently don’t have hybrid AMGs is that the in-house tuning company’s current customer base just wouldn’t buy into it, and that the process needs to be proven to make the cars better before they go into production."
Damn straight most on this forum wouldn't buy in to a hybrid version... Not until it's damn near "standard of care"

So nobody really wants the La Ferrari, 918 or the P1. People are also still paying over list for the BMW I8.
The reason why those are desirable is because they are good. Let's face it the reason why is because it is more expensive to produce and would cut the huge profit margins they make on the 63AMG variants.
BMW already have a plant up and running producing Carbon Fiber Hybrid vehicles which will put them leagues ahead by the time 2020 comes around.
I love Mercedes but I do think they are going to be late to the party and the reason of the current customer base would not buy into it is a poor excuse.
