key blanks

i went to a mercedes dealership today and asked them if they sold blank keys. they told me that blanks arent sold and that i have to order the keys already precut by giving them the vin number. is this true? i mean it's a 71...the key isn't lazer cut or anything....

The keys for most MBs are high-security and patented. It's a system used on architectural (building) locks as well.

Is the Mercedes from 1971? Yes you can order the exact key the car came with based on the VIN. They will cut it for you based on the VIN. Amazing.

yes, at most dealerships, they will ask for your registration and drivers license to show them that you are the actual owner. Then they put in a order based on your VIN number to Germany and they will ship it over in a few days to a week with a duplicate.

Kinda cool if you ask me, that they keep records of all keys made...gotta be so many in that database.
