Smart Key will unlock doors but will not start vehicle
I had to get Roadside Assist over when, 20 miles from home, my Smart Key would all of a sudden not work -- turning it to the start position produced no effect whatsoever. [My GLK uses a Smart Key and does not have push buttom start.] I knew the failure was not caused by the Smart Key battery, as the doors would lock and unlock at will (that's what the smart key battery does). Roadside assist determined that my GLK's battery was perfect, and concluded that for some reason the Smart Key was not communicating with the car's ignition anymore. They ordered a tow home ($165!! thankfully paid by Roadside Assist) and when I tried my second Smart Key it worked perfectly.
My questions are:
1) Does this happen routinely enough that I should always carry both Smart Keys with me?
2) What makes this happen?
3) I have an appointment with the dealer to drop off the car in three days. They will attempt to reprogram the Smart Key, and told me that if that fails they may even have to order one from Germany. Is it true that these keys are not even available locally?
Thanks for any info.
