Painting black legacy plates.

Sorry didn't know where else to put this post but I just received some all black legacy plates for my black cls mercedes and I notice they have a silver frame around them due to whatever machine process they use to cut the plates. Anyway I wanted to paint the edges black but i'm sure there's some law in the dmv handbook against doing anything to the plates. Was just wondering if anyone has tried this or is it legal or what. It bothers me that I paid the dmv extra money for these and they cant paint the entire plates black. Another option was to put a black plate frame around it but I was hoping to be able to rock just the plates I like that look a little better.

If you're talking about the CA legacy plates, I hear ya. Clearly they make a 5x5 or 10x10 matrix of plates, then they paint them, then they stamp them out into the individual plates. They should have made sure the paint wrapped all the way around the edges by doing some post-stamping touch up process. It's cheap labor, right??

I'm not sure of the law, but honestly, your not defacing the plate or trying to fake-out the authorities, and I doubt the police would even know. Personally, I'm not worried about it.

I just used a Sharpie along the edge of my plate. I just did it a few days ago, and so far it's holding up. I haven't washed the car since I did it, so I'm not sure if it's going to last very long (probably not). If it doesn't, I'm going to use some

and that should take care of it for the long term.

Yea I got impatient and just used the black touchup paint I had for my car around the edges. It's ridiculous that we're basically handing the dmv extra money and they can't do this right. Also have you noticed a green or brown glare on the plates when you shine light on them? Mine get this green hue like they are covered in that rainbow wax or something... I've seen others that have a brownish glare as well.

Mine has a brownish hue to it. From a distance, you can't tell, and I get 100% compliments on the plates when people are checking it out. But, if you're really looking at it, it's not truly black.

The brown I could deal with, I really have no idea why mine have this bright green tint to it when you flash light on them at night. It literally looks like they are covered in that rainbow wax, i'm thinking about contacting dmv even though I know that's probably useless.
