2001 C 240
Question Key from one car working in another one

When I bought a C240, 2001/2002 in Feb 2014 I order a new key because the seller did not find the extra key.
As I received the key I started using it up to Sep 2017 when I bought a C280, 2007/2008. Like the C240 I have to order a new key by the same reason: former owner did not find extra key.
When I left the C240 for sale in a used car store, I left in the car the old key, and keep the extra one I bought in 2014 at home.
When I received the C280 new key, I started using it and left the old one at home together with the C240 extra key.
In May 2018, six months after the C240 was in the store, I have to go there with the extra, because battery went down and the key they have was not turning the starter!
To my surprise the key I took to the store also did not start the car. Thinking that I was using the wrong key, I tried the extra key of the C280 and. It did not work either!
Then to clarify which one was to the C240 extra key I tried booth in the C280, and to my surprise they worked!
Now I have tree keys for the C280 and just a very old one to the C240!
Who can explain this to me? Dealer mechanics, so far, could not explain what happened!
