How to Determine Automatic Transmission Problems

I read somewhere in this forum that someone had his transmission replaced under Starmark Warranty. How can I tell if I have transmission problems or if it needs an adjustment(if there is such a thing)? When I am reversing my S500 and then put it in drive(after coming to a full stop) there is a lag of maybe a second before the gears engage. Is this normal?
