Flat-bottomed steering wheel

Hi fellow Benz owners. I currently own a 2014 C250 sedan with the AMG sport trim package and I just purchased a new 2018 C300 sedan also with the AMG sport trim package. Both cars have a flat-bottomed rim steering wheel. I don’t know much about cars, but is there a specific reason for that flat bottom rim? It is for easy ingress and egress? Or is it aesthetics for enthusiasts? Or is it for ergonomics? Thank you.

Instead of rotating the wheel all the way, you can pull the flat bottom up or down to make the wheel rotate. Because it looks cool, and it's practical now when most car steering is less than two turns lock to lock. The steering wheels on racecars are sometimes flat-bottomed to make it easier to get in and out. Not my words but it sounds good. Maybe fat people will get stuck.
