Buying a new car: W211 320 CDI vs. E9X 330D

Buying a new car: W211 320 CDI vs. E9X 330D
Hey! This is my first post here and I just registered as we're looking to buy a new car to replace my gf's E36 and I can't decide between two cars: the W211 with the 320 CDI ( or the 280 CDI ) or the BMW E90/E91 330D
Disclaimer: I'm a Mercedes guy. I've only owned Mercedeses and they're a family thing. I'm not into bimmers that much but I have to admit the 3 series E90 looks objectively newer than similarly priced Mercs.
Now, the thing is that I want a ""sporty"" diesel to drive tons of miles with style and power. As I will get the car remapped, the power will be very similar and here are the pros for both car I can list now:
W211:
- timeless sedan
- very comfy ride
- a lot of room
- cheaper to buy than the BMW
- it's a Mercedes!
E9X:
- newer and sportier looking
- a bit more compact
- lighter?
- more fuel efficient
Both cars seem to be great choices but I would like to hear from people who owned one of these cars or both and what they would say about these.

Actually she wants a ML W164
but we agreed on the W211 and the E9X as they're a bit more fuel efficient ( we drive approximately 25k miles per year )She likes BMW but she now prefers Mercedes bc of the interiors. So the W211 seemed like a pretty good choice before switching to the ML in a year or two.
