Is enough enough?

I can't remember where, but in reading about the new SL65, it was mentioned that BMW execs were overheard grumbling, "Enough is enough already." The comment was, I believe, made in regards to the huge hp/torque numbers the AMG-tuned engine puts forth.

What do y'all think? Have the hp wars gone far enough? I'd personally prefer less "numbers" from AMG and more emphasis on handling. If that aspect were improved and they started offering more MT choices, I'd be sold in an instant.

You are not alone with this line of thinking. Ulrich Bruhnke, managing director of AMG, quite and went to M GmbH for this same reason! I would say that is a pretty good indication that you are correct.

Interesting, I didn't know that. AMG is MB's in-house tuner, right? So they get their directives from MB directly? I'm wondering if it's the AMG or if it's the MB thinking that more hp/tq = better, rather than working on other characteristics of the drive/ride.

I'm just a little peeved that MB has fallen into the American car mentality of "bigger engine = better."

The decisions come from MB on series production cars. AMG can build good cars. i.e. the CLK DTM AMG but MB tells them what to do as far as mass production cars go. Bruhnke got frustrated with what MB was telling him to build so he left and went to BMW. I presume he picked BMW because they were willing to listen instead of dictate, but that's mere conjecture on my part.

I agree that the 65AMG Series is a little much, it almost seems foolish to build these machines, as so many people would be happy with only the 55AMG or even the 600.

MB is getting a LOT of press with the new 600's and 65AMG's. BMW is still building great all around cars (has anyone ever driven an E46 3 series? try one, you'll see what I mean,) and getting no respect from mag's (besides car and driver ) becuase they're not throwing up 700 ft/lbs TQ.

To sum it up, BMW's amazing overall driving product is being overshadowed by MB's all powerufl engines.
