Mercedes vs Toyota MSRP comparison 1998 vs 2020

E320 (1998)/E300 (2020) vs Camry
ML320 (1998)/GLE350 (2020) vs 4Runner
The price gap has compressed in relative terms between the two brands. This means Mercedes is less premium vs Toyota in this analysis.
This in my view can be a partial explanation of Mercedes cheapening and reduced reliability over the time period. Mercedes is getting squeezed by the mainstream car companies and new entrants to premium segments (Koreans and Tesla) are adding to the pressure.
Why doesn’t Mercedes go upscale and deliver the features and styling it offers today, but with meaningfully better new car quality and long term reliability than today’s abysmal level of performance? And charge a premium price delta like in 1998, or higher? It would knock off some of the heavy tarnish from the three pointed star.
Haven’t the management at M-B taken Business 101?
