Mercedes aren't cheaper in Germany?

After hearing over and over again that Mercedes are incredibly cheap in Germany compared to here in the United States, I finally went to the Mercedes website in Germany. A CLK320 here is around $45K USD, a CLK320 there is around $40K EUR, which is around $48K USD. The ratio's are the same for the E-Class, SL, and every other car that I checked. Also, the cars are supposed to be relatively stripped down in Germany compared to here... since when are Mercedes cars cheaper in the United States than they are in Germany?

Mercedes are Not Cheaper Per Say...

But are available with less options. In America, you have a limited number of options and packages. If you want a Benz (E Class) without leather, you're out of luck here; also on the E, you're stuck with the 320. In Europe, you can get a 220 (savings right there).

Similiarly equip cars would probably cost the same.

On a tangent...
Did you know that you can take factory delivery on a US model? MB will give you around 5% off the list price (and 7% on some models), fly you to Stutgart, put you in a hotel, feed you breakfast, let you drive the car to a shipping point, then ship it back home (if you don't mind waiting 2 or 3 months)...for free.

No ED Discount for R171

Not every model gets a discount for European delivery. An example would be the new SLK R171. Probably because it is a new MY.

It all depends on exchange rate. The dollar right now is trading pretty low against the Euro (.81) which makes 40K Euro equal about $49K dollars. Last year at this time the exchange rate was .88 which made that same amount equal to $45K dollars. Two years ago the exchange rate was 1.03 which made that same amount $39k dollars.

So yes, typically Mercedes Benz are less expensive when bought in Germany when compared to the United States. But typically the exchange rate is much better.

And four years ago it was 1.18, which made $33.8 US worth 40K Euros. So in the period of four years the US dollar has slipped considerably compared to the Euro.

I think this is one of the reasons MBUSA has been consistently de-contenting the newer models (especially with the C-class), to make up for the fact that their profit margin is taking a beating.
