I am in the middle of swapping my old Volvo XC60 for a better and nicer Mercedes. The choice now is between a 2014 GL or a 2016 GLE.Both are well equipped, and the price is about the same (appr $38k). The GLE have Apple Carplay which would be nice, the GL doesn´t. OTOH there are ventilated seats on the GL...
I really like the GL (I have a dog and also like big cars), but I would like to hear some input from someone in the knows. Are there any special errors I should know about for the GL? Is it much smarter to go for the 9G on the newer GLE? etc etc.

GL and GLE are quite different vehicles.

The GL is a larger vehicle if that matters to you.

The GLE has updated nav if that matters to you.

Diesel MBs from this time period are terrible, if you are in North America. Europe may be a different story because of fuel purity differences. The Bluetec diesels are an abomination in North America.

Large = Like
Nevigation = Not that important, have it all in the iPhone.

The engine problem is important though. I read about the Bluetec problems, but I am not sure if it applies to us in Sweden. Really don't know the difference between the US engine and the European one.
