Some general questions on a 2009 ML550
I just took over from a friend of mine a 2009 ML550 with about 155,000 miles. I was really surprised the MB does not burn much oil like other cars of high mileage. The engine runs pretty good and very peppy too.
I have been driving Japanese vehicles in the past years, like 1995 Lexus LS 400, 1996 Land cruiser and a 1990 LS 400 but I donated it when it hit 190k miles. Riding in a 2009 ML550 feels so dfferent from a Jap's car. It feels sturdy, solid and safe too with about 5000 lbs in weight (the Land cruiser weighs similar but don't feel the same way as the MB). Even though the engine is not as quiet as a Lexus. Probably the MB has too many miles on it.
1) the signal light in the right mirror is not working. I tried to replace it but I cannot remove the glass. I checkes the postings on Youtube.com. It looks like they are diff. from what I have. Any recommendations?
2) a couple of bulb sockets are broken.
3) there is no drain plug on the trans oil pan, and no dip stick either. Is fluid change a DIY job? The manual says there is no need to check trans fluid. Somehow it's hard to believe.
4) What type of brake pads would you recommend for the MB, semi-metallic, ceramic or anything else?
5) the front bearing retaining nut (the square nut can be tightened or loosened with a 5mm Allen wrench) is univeral for all the MB models? Mine doesn't have one, just a regular hex nut. I don't think it's original.
6) is there an AMG model/year that is not equiped with air suspension and turbo charged engine? Those two things will scare me away considering the cost of repairs.
I have done some basic maintenance like changing engine oil, air filters and spark plugs. I like the oil filer location. It's so easy to access. But for fhe LS400, you need to remove driver side front wheel before you can see the filter.
Thanks a lot in advance.
