Factory Restoration

After 3 years of lurking, this is my first official post. I signed up to the site 3 years ago to learn more about my 01 S55 AMG. Well I sold of the car 6 months ago, and replaced it with a 04 E55 AMG. I personally enjoy the E55 better than the S55. I find the S55 just a tad too big for me.

Anyway, back to why I'm posting. I read somewhere that MB in Germany has somekind of retoration facility that restores vintage cars. Is this service available for us in the US?

If it is, does anyone know how to go about exporting and importing the same car? This is just hypothetical. What if I'm to buy a 300SL Gullwing that needs a complete restoration. I send it to Stuttgart for ground up resto. Let's say, after a year, the project is finished. Obviously, I want my car back here in the US. Would I have to deal with EPA and DOT? How about Customs? What kind of Customs due am I looking at? I pose this question for cars of any make or model. It could be a Ferrari going to Maranello for full restoration or a Lamborghini to Sant'Agata.

You are referring to the Mercedes Classic Center. If you want to have your old Mercedes-Benz restored, this is the place to take it, if you can afford it. The center opened in 1993, and the factory restorers have access to a vast parts inventory and company archives for historical accuracy. Unless you absolutely have to have it done at the Classic Center, there are shops in the US that can do a ground up restoration of a Gullwing. Scott Grundfor

The center employs a full-time staff of 45 craftsmen who have access to all of DaimlerChrysler’s technical facilities. That means the craftsmen can call upon the most advanced technologies and equipment in the company’s research labs to reproduce or repair parts. Restoration specialists also have access to a parts inventory of over 25,000 available items from a multitude of Mercedes-Benz approved suppliers. These craftsmen also have access to the company archives, which contain detailed information on all Daimler, Benz, Mercedes and Mercedes-Benz vehicles. If you’re serious enough about your car’s restoration to bring it to the factory shop, you’re serious enough to want it done in a historically correct manner.

In addition to restorations, the center also buys and sells classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles. You can get an accurate appraisal of your car’s value and have the center broker a deal.

The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center is located in Fellbach, Germany, and is open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm. For customer inquiries call Mercedes-Benz USA headquarters in Montvale, N.J., at 201-573-0600, or call the center directly at 011-49 711/17-8 34 53.
