Question for PPF Installers

What is the work associated with the paint correction before applying PPF? Bought my car to have PPF applied and was told they do paint correction and wondering what this means in the industry.

Thanks
Steve

Guess my question was trying to find out if fixing paint chips was part of paint correction or is that considered body work? My guy put the PPF over the chips...

It's mostly minor paint correction they do. The car gets detailed and the surface gets prepped, so that the PPF will adhere. At most, they'll buff out minor blemishes. Fixing paint chips is not part of it. I had put PPF on one car that had a couple of paint chips and the installer actually recommended to touch them up over the film instead of before. I ended up just leaving them.

Thank you. My guy said if he touched up the chips it would leave a raised surface and the PPF would stand off the vehicle around it and look much worse. I told him using a black permanent marker (black) would have be nice to hide the white spots. There is one decent chip right on top of the right
fender that I complained the most about. I guess if he filled it he would have to sand it and sanding it even with the rest of the fender without effecting the surrounding area would be tough if not impossible. Still think a dab of black marker would have gone a long way in hiding it.

Appreciate the answer. At least I now know he didn't get lazy in not correcting it. Told him they should call it Paint Prep instead of Paint Correction to set expectation. Rest of the car looks great but of course the imperfection stands out... at least it does to me. :-)

Yes, that's basically the reason. The surface won't be smooth anymore and the film could bubble and not adhere in that spot. Basically would have to repaint the affected body panel and then you have the risk of the paint coming off when the film needs to be removed, because nothing is as good as factory paint.
