Depends. What is the interface of the drive? If it is "that old", an image of the drive to a modern SSD (I would use Samsung, if only for the free software to image, Crucial also has free software to image the drive).
So, if you are going from a spinning disk to SSD, it will go a bit faster. From there, what is the OS and is the drive ACHI (I doubt it). Most newer drives do not boot in the same way as a 'much' older drive and can not be run in a newer computer (last three or four years).

I thought about an SSD as a backup plan but it also only has 2GB of RAM I think it can get to a max of 8GB.
I was hoping I could grab a newer computer with a faster processor and clone the drive to it but you bring up a good point I don't know if a newer machine can run XP.

Brand new, no. Newer? Sure. More so that XP was not typically a 64bit OS. No matter what an SSD will make it faster and a bit more stable (not subject to impact or wear like a spinning disk).
