To EV or not to EV?
My experience has been great and for me, I would never go back to ICE.
But your decision will depend on a lot of things.
- Typical driving distances
- Your driving style/preferences
- Ability to charge at home and along the highway when on road trips
- Whether or not your prefer silence or the roar & rumble of an ICE vehicle
- Your tolerance for learning a whole new way of operating and interacting with a car which is, essentially, a computer on wheels.
- EV's are more like appliances and thus far depreciate more rapidly than ICE. Would you buy a used iPhone?
- Thus, there are great deals on used 2021-2023 cars out there coming off lease. But again, would you buy a used iPhone?
- I bought my 2023 EQE SUV new because I did not want the hassle of lease payments and restrictions. And because I have never leased a vehicle before. Given how fast these vehicles depreciate, were I to do it over again, I would take a closer look at leasing options, in case there's a chance that the lessor would take the larger part of the depreciation hit. But, that will be a long way down the line, as my intent from the beginning has been to keep my car at least 10 years, at which point rate of depreciation really doesn't matter. Is it practical to think one can keep an EV for 10 years? I don't know. The jury is still out on that.
Current EVs are lease only btw. Don't purchase ANY new unless you don't care about the depreciation and plan on driving it til the wheels fall off.
Some of the advantages of ICE over EV,
No range anxiety
No need to plan extensively for pit stops
Pit stops for gas only, in and out in 10-15 minutes
Flexibility for spontaneous road trips
The nostalgia of petroliana
No waiting in hours long lines for charging(refueling) away from home
No anxiety running heat or air conditioning
No maintenance anxiety
More overall peace of mind
More overall enjoyment of motoring
