Ga prices

There are many threads here about gas. Octane ratings, Top Tier, etc. But I had an experience yesterday that a was a bit of a shock to me but maybe not to others. I try to buy gas at Costco because of the TT rating. The closest Costco to me is in Webster, TX. Their price for premium today is $2.90 vs regular at $2.40, a differential of $0.50. I had to drive to The Woodlands yesterday early and I was running on fumes. I pulled into the Costco there, which happens to share a driveway with my former MB dealer. Regular was $2.39, but premium was $3.34. a differential of $0.95. Their premium was $0.44 higher than my closer Costco. So I paid about $6.00 more to fill up in The Woodlands. Is that the end of the world? Of course not. Does it validate caveat emptor? Sure does. Costco, as any capitalist venture does, is taking advantage of their location directly next to an MB dealer. My brain says good for them but my pocketbook says ouch. BTW the almost $1.00 differential between the grades is about the same at the Valero stations in Galveston.

Yep, that's just how it goes. Stations near wealthy areas or car dealerships always jack up the premium price. They know the customers there will pay for it. It's pure location-based pricing. Always hurts to see that extra dollar difference.

Sort of like why things are more expensive in a gas station, at an airport etc. it is all business. They are not a charity I guess.

Exactly. They charge more because they can. You're a captive customer with fewer choices, so it's pure capitalism.

Where i am, suburban Maryland, premium is 93 octane, and mid grade is 89. When I have the time and inclination I will mix the two. Saves a little money, sometimes a few dollars, but just feels more efficient, not wasting that unnecessary octane. In the old days, when I cared more about money, I would drive to find the best price. I guess I still like to pinch pennies!
