Question Tire Pressure Monitoring System

With everybody changing wheels to 20s and 22s, do the wheels have the electronic sensors that allow the tire pressure monintoring system to still operate?

The pressure monitoring system is integrated with the ABS system. Here's some info from the supplier:

Wolfgang, are you positive that MB is using indirect TPMS? I thought Schrader Electronics was supplying their RTPMS, a "direct" monitoring system, to MB. Schrader Electronics was awarded a contract by MB in 2004 to start using the RTPMS in 2006 models. If this is the case, there are sensors mounted in each wheel.

MBGLGuy, thanks for the link. The ABS based system is standard whereas the RTPMS system is optional, with option code 475 for EU295 in Germany for example. Not sure if it's offered in North America. There's also some info on the MBUSI site, but only for the ML, since they have not yet put up GL-Class info it seems but presumably the ML's system is similar.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Mercedes-Benz inventions such as ABS anti-lock brakes, ASR traction control ESP stability control and Brake Assist are standard on all Mercedes passenger vehicles, including the new M-Class. However, the 2006 sport utility has a new feature that makes clever use of existing wheel speed sensors for ABS and ESP.
Since an under-inflated tire is smaller and rolls slightly faster to keep up with the other three, the system uses wheel speed signals to identify under-inflated tires and alert the driver. In effect, the ESP system not only helps to keep the car safely on course but now also keeps an eye on tire pressure.

Thanks for the info, Wolfgang. The ABS-based system would seem to be a better, more intelligent solution for monitoring tire pressure.

The North American MB website has no option for upgrading to RTPMS on the GL. They only refer to the pressure monitoring system as "Low Tire Pressure Warning System", which is standard.
