I wouldn't take toom much notice of the JD Power rankings. Firstly it doesn't rate the severity of the problems (ie a blown engine and blown interier light globe are rated the same) and secondly JD are well know to prop up figures for companies paying JD to help improve their quality. Also one more point, the more expensive the car, the more people will complain about any inperfections.

Steve,

You totally nailed it on your last point. The more money you spend - the pickier people get and the more they look for stuff to ***** about. "my Mercedes made a thunking noise when I drove through a pothole"...wah..."I can feel my Mercedes lurch when it shifts into 2nd from 1st"...wah..."my Mercedes got a flat when I ran over a screw"....wah...."my Mercedes will blow up if I change my own oil"...wah...."my fingers have grease on them from opening my hood"...wah...

OK, I'm being stupid now, but you get the point!

Just got back from a trip up north to a soccer tournament and my GL450 was flawless carrying 5 people, lots of luggage and gear, 6 cases of water and a cooler. Very comfy...gps was 100%...stereo rocked....even drove through a muddy field with no slippage. Best vehicle I've ever owned!

Porshe and Lexus are top two ranked.

With Porshe and Lexus both selling relativley expensive vehicles, don't know if that line of thinking really works.

You missed my point regarding who pays JD for their ranking. Lexus and Toyota have long connection with contracting JD for consultive work on improving quality. Toyota/Lexus have such an overwhelming reputation for being reliable that people with buy them purely because of this reputation, then if minor problems exist they won't complain about them because is removes their justification for buying a boring car in the first place. With regards to Porsche no-one drives them long enough to have problems, I can't recall ever seeing a high milage Porshe for sale that was less that 5 years old.

After all that I believe that Merc deserves it's low placing because it has had it's quality problems particularly electrical gremlins, but I think it's getting better and we will see Merc moving higher up the ladder where it belongs.

I guess I will be the rolling guinea pig! Coming soon to a forum near you, the 2thfixr initial quality survey. So far they have all been trouble free except for the S500.
