You totally nailed it on your last point. The more money you spend - the pickier people get and the more they look for stuff to ***** about. "my Mercedes made a thunking noise when I drove through a pothole"...wah..."I can feel my Mercedes lurch when it shifts into 2nd from 1st"...wah..."my Mercedes got a flat when I ran over a screw"....wah...."my Mercedes will blow up if I change my own oil"...wah...."my fingers have grease on them from opening my hood"...wah...
OK, I'm being stupid now, but you get the point!
Just got back from a trip up north to a soccer tournament and my GL450 was flawless carrying 5 people, lots of luggage and gear, 6 cases of water and a cooler. Very comfy...gps was 100%...stereo rocked....even drove through a muddy field with no slippage. Best vehicle I've ever owned!

After all that I believe that Merc deserves it's low placing because it has had it's quality problems particularly electrical gremlins, but I think it's getting better and we will see Merc moving higher up the ladder where it belongs.
I guess I will be the rolling guinea pig! Coming soon to a forum near you, the 2thfixr initial quality survey.
So far they have all been trouble free except for the S500.
