First my GL was hot, as in the A/C control module quit working at 400 miles. Then it became a lowrider when the front airmatic compressor quit. Now I hear a strange whine from the engine. Aside from the normal whine from the 4-matic drivetrain, there is a whine like an old fire-engine siren coming from the engine. At first I thought it was from the transmission, but I put it in neutral and revved the engine, and there it was. I dread to think what it could be now. Aside from being annoying, I plan to continue driving it until something quits for real. I visit my dealer as little as possible and truly hate driving the rent-a-sh*t they give me each time I go. Has anyone else experienced this in their GL? Mine currently has 5300 miles on the clock. God only knows what it will sound like when it has 15,000.

Sorry to hear that you are having another problem.
I do not know what would cause the noise you are describing.

They told me its an engine idle issue and I had to wait until a part arrived. We will see if it works when i get the GL back this afternoon

Come on... Lemon law? Sh*t happens! Problems are a pain in the butt but every manufacturer has them. If you don't believe me, log on to any forum for any vehicle and you will see a slew of posts about problems and how the manufacturer won't stand behind their product. The problem with relying purely on forums to determine the reliability of a car is that usually it's the problems that get reported and discussed. People don't log on just to say, "my air conditioner doesn't have any problems", "my airmatic has been flawless", or even "my idler pulley is so quiet that I can hear a pin drop". If I relied on posts in this forum to determine whether I would have purchased my GL or not, I would have bought an Escalade. Then again, if I looked at the Escalade forums, I'm sure there would have been enough things to keep me from buying that car as well.
Let me state the following for the record.
I have had no problems with my GL450. I have 7000 miles on it and it has been flawless.
My air conditioner works flawlessly and is almost instantly ice cold.
My airmatic works flawlessly and is used quite often. I raise the car up when I wash it to get into the wheel wells. I also raise the car up whenever I am in traffic so I can see ahead of the cars in front of me.
My idler pulley is silent.
I might also add, my seats work fine, my lights work fine, my tires roll properly, my windows work, my wipers work, my dash doesn't rattle, my lights turn on, etc etc. (just thought I would add that for the record). That being said, I can also state for the record that I won't be keeping this car after the warranty expires.
BTW: Neodoc, I am not making light of your situation, on the contrary, I feel for you as there is nothing more disappointing than having car trouble with a new car. You paid a little more, you certainly deserve to get a little more. Unfortunately parts is parts. If the OEM parts suppliers are failing to make quality parts, it makes Mercedes look bad, but they can only spec the parts, they don't actually manufacture them. I am just posting in response to the lemon law suggestion.

Is extended warranty really worth now as MB doesn't support *free/full maintenance* during warranty anymore for '05 and up models? Originally Posted by carpersn

If lot of problems(warranty covered) shows up during first 4 years/50k miles,
I would consider selling it before warrenty expires. I have been reading GL forums for last few weeks and wishing my GL comming next week to be Perfect :-). ie.
(1) No airmatic problems.
(2) A/C works fine and cools 3rd row as well (I didnt take 3zone CC).
(3) Quite on freeways, no rattles.
(4) Nero burned DVDs works fine in RSE.
If you dont see me posting anything after next week, you can assume I am one of the lucky one to get a perfectly built GL with well tested parts :-).
Regardless of all these issues, I love the GL design, thats why I am still going for it.
