Q & R
GL320 Brakes vs GL450 Brakes

Just got my GL brochure from MB in the mail.

These vehciles appear mechanically identical on paper, except for the axle ratios and the front brakes.

The Diesel has smaller front rotors! About 14in vs 15in for the V-8.

The vehicle weights are listed as same. (Which I seriously doubt) Why the smaller brakes? It can't weigh THAT much less than the V-8. I want the diesel for towing - but I think the bigger brakes is a plus.

I don't know the reason for the smaller brakes in front but if there is anything MB does weil, it is how to stop their cars. I wouldn't be concerned if you prefer the diesel over the gas model. I am sure they have tested the efficiency of the brakes for both models and had good reason to effect the change in the diesel design.

Mercedes puts smaller brakes on the diesels across the board. The engine compression provides a lot of braking power. On my E 320CDI I still have the same set of pads/rotors after 75,000 miles. My rotors on the E are smaller by one inch as well compared to the gas counterparts.
